UHA Awards 2024

Thank you for your interest in this year's UHA awards cycle. We are excited to announce TWO new categories this year. To submit, please follow the instructions below. 

*Active UHA members may submit for up to 2 awards. If you are submitting on behalf of an author, please ensure they are an active member before submitting to two categories.

   SUBMISSION DEADLINE: MAY 10, 2024 11:59PM EST.  

Kenneth Jackson Award for Best Book in North American Urban History (excluding Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean)

The UHA will award a prize of $1000 for the best monograph in North American (excluding Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean) urban history with a citation listing 2023 as the year of publication. 

To submit a work for consideration for this award, please follow these steps:

  2. Upon completion, you will receive an email with submission instructions.  
  3. Mail materials to the addresses shared with you via email. Each member of the award committee must receive a copy of the work(s) submitted.

UHA Award for Best Book in Urban History (excluding the U.S., Canada, and Europe)


The UHA will award a prize of $1000 for the best monograph in Urban History (excluding the U.S., Canada, and Europe) with a citation listing 2023 as the year of publication.

Joe William Trotter, Jr. Book Prize for Best First Book in Urban History

The UHA will award a prize of $500 for the best first book in urban history with a citation listing 2023 as the year of publication.

Lynn Hollen Lees Book Prize for Best Book in European Urban History

The UHA will award a prize of $500 for the best book in European urban history with a citation listing 2023 as the year of publication.

Arnold Hirsch Award for Best Article in Urban History published in a Scholarly Journal 

(No geographic restriction) 


The UHA will award a prize of $500 for the best article on urban history published in a scholarly journal with a citation listing 2023 as the year of publication.

To submit a work for consideration for this award, please follow these steps:

  3. Submit materials to the email addresses provided. Each member of the award committee must receive a copy of the article.

Michael Katz Award for Best Dissertation in Urban History 

(No geographic restriction) 

The UHA will award a prize of $500 for the best dissertation in urban history with a completion date in 2023.  Submissions must be defended, submitted, and published in your university's library system, with a citation listing 2023 as the year of publication.

To submit a work for consideration for this award, please follow these steps:

FAQs

Why do I have to fill out a form to receive the submissions information?
Award committee members provide email and physical addresses for award submissions. Requiring you to fill out a form to receive the submissions information allows us to keep our committee member information more private than if we listed it on our website. 

When will the winners be announced? 
Award winners will be announced in Fall 2024.
